What is CPP?

Core Process Psychotherapy is a synthesis of Western psychology and Buddhist understanding which has been taught and developed by Maura and Franklyn Sills of the Karuna Institute over many years. It works with body, mind and feelings towards a greater sense of our underlying wholeness. Its emphasis is on exploring our particular experience and it respects each individual’s journey towards healing.

Core Process Psychotherapy trusts that within and encompassing all our experience, even the most painful, there is a ‘Core’ state of openness and joy which is intrinsically healing. As we bring awareness, sometimes known as mindfulness, to what is happening in us in the present moment we can begin to see the ways in which we hold on to our suffering. This in turn can enable us to move towards greater creativity and flexibility in our lives.

The understanding in Core Process psychotherapy is that the ‘Core’ state is inherent in all of us. The phrase ‘Core Process’ describes the interaction between this state, which we all share, and our separate sense of ourselves, shaped as it is by our past and our continuing stories about our selves. As we bring awareness to the present moment we can begin to open to the Core state and its qualities of joy, love, peace and compassion.

Being and Becoming is a recently published book by Franklyn Sills, one of the founders of the Karuna Institute, which explores in depth Core Process Psychotherapy’s unique and wide-ranging perspective. For details see our publications page.
